A 5,000-PC network uses 3 million kWh annually on average; at electricity rates ranging from $0.07 to $0.18 per kWh, the cost to power this size of network is $210,000 to $540,000 yearly.

While most PCs have energy-saving settings such as standby, hibernate and shutdown, over 80% of users disable their low-power settings.2

Software that measures and reduces PC network energy costs

Verdiem's SURVEYOR software addresses a key challenge for your organization - finding ways to operate more efficiently and eliminate unnecessary costs. SURVEYOR lowers costs by reducing total PC energy consumption, reducing PC energy use during peak demand periods, and reducing facility cooling costs, all without affecting user productivity.

With SURVEYOR, you can take advantage of a simple cost-saving opportunity that many organizations overlook: the ability to eliminate the huge energy waste of PCs that are running at full power when no user is present. By using SURVEYOR to automatically put PCs into low power states when they're not in use, you can save an average of $15 to $40 in wasted energy per PC per year, save additional energy costs during "peak demand" periods, and reduce facility-cooling costs - all without affecting user productivity.

SURVEYOR reduces your organization's energy consumption

PCs and their monitors are voracious consumers of electricity, and their energy use is soaring to keep pace with faster processors, more RAM, and power-hungry peripherals. The average PC consumes 600 kWh (kilowatt-hours) annually. Worse, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, up to 400 kWh - a full two thirds - of that electricity is wasted simply because most PCs are running at full power when no user is present.1 Since PC energy costs are not separate line items in utility bills, many budget managers are not aware of the high cost of powering their PC networks.

While most PCs have energy-saving settings such as standby, hibernate and shutdown, over 80% of users disable their low-power settings.2 SURVEYOR solves this problem by giving managers network-level control over the power settings of all Microsoft Windows-based PCs, from Windows 95 to XP. Network managers can easily configure and maintain PC power settings across distributed networks to automatically send PCs into low-power states as needed, saving an average of 200 kWh per PC yearly (half of the energy that is typically wasted, and a third of the energy that is usually consumed).3 That's a cost savings of $15 to $40 per PC annually, depending on local electricity rates. And because SURVEYOR has built-in measurement capabilities, these network-wide energy savings can be verified.

The Bottom Line

Investing in SURVEYOR is an easy way to lower total operating costs by $15 to $40 per PC per year. When peak demand and HVAC savings are included, your organization can save even more—$26 to $50 or more per PC annually. That’s up to $250,000 in cost savings for a 5,000-PC network each year— money that’s freed up to spend on other goals, such as advancing your organization’s core mission. Moreover, SURVEYOR’s payback period is typically less than a year.

Peak Demand Reduction

SURVEYOR can help your organization reduce energy use during "peak demand" times. Peak demand times are determined by your utility and depend on many factors such as weather, availability or disruptions of electricity supplies, and overall demand levels. When electricity is in short supply, rates can soar. Peak demand rates can be $9 or more per kW depending on the region of the U.S. and the time of year, and can add 20% or more to your annual utility bill. Over the course of a year, during non-peak demand time, SURVEYOR can help you save $15 to $40 per PC. However, if only 1% of the energy that SURVEYOR saves occurs during 2 peak hours annually and the peak charge is $9 per kW, SURVEYOR would save an additional $9 per PC in peak demand charges. The peak energy savings SURVEYOR can deliver to your organization will depend on many factors; Trilliant Group can help you estimate your potential savings.

4 AC Savings are based on research by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-conditioning Engineers) June 2000. PCs cause facility cooling loads to increase by 25% to 50% of each PC's "nameplate" consumption, according to this research. On average this amounts to $3 per year per PC.
